Tiger eye forms when crocidolite (a fibrous blue mineral) is gradually replaced by quartz over geological time, with iron oxide producing the warm golden tones and the parallel fibrous structure causing the chatoyancy. The richest deposits today are in South Africa, India, and Western Australia.
Across cultures, tiger eye has been carried as a courage stone — Roman soldiers wore it into battle as protection, and modern crystal practitioners recommend it before public speaking, negotiations, or important decisions. Its grounding energy steadies nerves while sharpening focus, a rare and useful combination.
Tiger eye comes in several color variations: classic golden tiger eye, smoky brown 'pietersite,' blue 'hawk's eye,' and red tiger eye (often heat-treated to deepen the hue). Each works slightly differently in healing practice but shares the same protective and confidence-boosting qualities.
Cleanse with sage smoke or by placing on a clear quartz cluster overnight. Avoid prolonged water exposure — the fibrous structure can absorb moisture over time. Sunlight is fine and helps preserve the golden color.
Tiger eye primarily works with the solar plexus (manipura) chakra — the seat of personal power and confidence — and secondarily with the sacral (svadhisthana) chakra for courage and creative drive.
Yes. Tiger eye is one of the oldest known protection stones, historically carried by soldiers and travelers. Modern crystal practitioners use it before high-pressure situations like exams, interviews, or stressful conversations.
The shifting bands of light are called chatoyancy, caused by parallel fibrous inclusions reflecting light as the stone is tilted. This optical effect is most pronounced in cabochon-cut tiger eye, less so in raw chunks.
Yes. Tiger eye is durable (Mohs 7) and excellent for daily wear in bracelets, pendants, and pocket stones. Many people wear it specifically on workdays for focus and decision-making support.
